Cougars Tame Bears

BROOKLYN, NY – For the second time in as many weeks, St. Joseph's men's volleyball fell against CUNYAC and Brooklyn rival, Medgar Evers. The Bears lost 3-0 back on March 2nd and Monday night was more of the same as the Cougars blanked the Bears once again.

After the Cougars jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first set, St. Joseph's started to mount a comeback. The Bears got to within four late, trailing 19-15, but couldn't overcome the deficit and dropped the set 25-17. Medgar Evers' Olando Cummings had four of his six kills during the set.

The Cougars finished off the Bears easily in the second and third sets, 25-12 and 25-13.

Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) tied a season high with five kills in the match - the other time also coming against Medgar Evers. He also finished with a game-high three blocks and eight points. Torres and teammate Muhammad Ali Bhatti (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) both registered a team-leading six digs.

In addition to Cummings, Jeff Campbell and Jason Brown also had a game-high tying six kills. Kristoffer Morrison and Shemroy Primo chipped in four kills and Phillips Parris handed out 24 assists for the Cougars.

The Bears conclude their HVMAC schedule with a rematch against Yeshiva. The Maccabees defeated the Bears back in February at Brooklyn Technical High School. Their latest tilt will be at Yeshiva on March 16th with first serve set for 8:00 pm.
