Urshela Receives HVIAC Men's Volleyball Player of the Week

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Junior Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) was named the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) men's volleyball Player of the Week after leading the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team to a season-opening win against Cooper Union on Friday.

Urshela paced the Bears to their first ever win over the Hawks, slamming down a match-high 17 kills, setting a new St. Joseph's single-match record for a three set affair. The junior hit an efficient .378 on the night, had two assists, six digs and two blocks as the Bears won their season opener for the second time in their six-year history.

Urshela finished with an impressive 5.67 kills per set and 6.8 points per set, picking up where he left off last season after leading St. Joseph's in kills and points a year ago.

The junior is now a four-time recipient of the weekly honor given out by the conference following his being named to the AD3I All-Independent First Team as a member of the men's soccer team in the fall.

The Bears travel to York College on Wednesday, February 5th for an 8 p.m. match against the Cardinals as part of a doubleheader with women's basketball.
