Men's Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets to York

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team never could get into a rhythm as the Bears fell to York College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-3, 25-9, 25-13), on Wednesday night at the York College Gym.

The Bears (1-1) could only muster up nine kills and seven digs throughout all three sets against the Cardinals (3-2), who never trailed the entire game.

Sophomore Taso Kostikas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) had four kills and three digs while junior Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) added three kills for the Bears.

The Cardinals were led by Randy Adams, who contributed seven kills and three digs. Sebastien Francois and Leszek Stankiewicz added seven and six kills, respectively.

The Bears got off to a slow start in the first set, with the Cardinals jumping out to an 11-2 advantage before a St. Joseph's timeout. Unfortunately, the team encountered numerous attack errors and fell decisively, 25-3.

The second frame saw the Bears get as close as two points, but the Cardinals finished strong, closing out on a 7-0 run as York took the second set.

The final stanza had the Cardinals run out to a 5-0 advantage and never looked back. Both teams traded points as the Bears trailed 16-10 as Kostikas added two kills, but York exploded with another 7-0 run to give the Cardinals a 3-0 set sweep.
