Men's Volleyball Drops Two Matches in Massachussetts

WESTON, Mass. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team fell to Regis College (Mass.) in straight sets 3-0 (25-6, 25-13, 25-15) then dropped a three-set loss to Mount Ida College (25-16, 25-21, 25-14), at Higgins Court on Saturday.

In their opening match, St. Joseph's (1-3) was led by Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) and Taso Kostikas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) had four kills a piece, and Iqbal Husain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) had ten assists throughout the match for the Bears.

The Pride (4-3) were led by Joe Hanrahan, who had a game-high 29 assists in the victory. Joe Coye and Zach Sindoni contributed seven kills each.

Leading off the day was Regis College, who struck early and jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first set. The Pride had a 7-0 run to balloon the lead to 15-2. A multitude of errors by the Bears allowed a 6-0 Regis outburst to close out the set 25-6.

The second frame saw the Bears hang tough throughout, at one point grabbing a 7-6 lead. With Regis up 12-11, they pulled away with a 13-2 tear to give the Pride the second stanza. St. Joseph's started the third set strong, taking a one point lead early in the frame. 

However, Regis' Zach Sidoni unleashed four straight service aces. and the Pride never looked back to complete the sweep.

In the second match, Mount Ida (6-5) was led by Brady Rodriguez, who had nine kills and eight digs. Michael McCullough added 29 assists for the Mustangs as well.

The Bears got five kills from Urshela and 12 digs from Kostikas. Clyde Delacruz (Brooklyn, NY/Frederick Douglas Academy II) also contributed five kills in a losing effort.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Against Regis, the Bears hit -.136 for the match and (10 K-19 E-10 A) while the Pride hit .281 in their three-game sweep (32 K-14 E-32 A).
  • In the Mount Ida match, St. Joseph's had a hit percentage of .014 and had more kills than errors (13 K-12 E-9 A). The Mustangs hit .243 and secured 33 kills (33 K-16 E-29 A).
