Urshela Awarded HVIAC Men's Volleyball Player of the Week

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Junior Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) was named the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) men's volleyball Player of the Week after leading the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team in kills during the week and to a win over conference foe Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday.

The now three-time HVIAC Player of the Week continued his strong play, recording double-digit kills in all three of the Bears matches this week. The outside hitter began the week with a 15-kill, 5-dig performance, finishing with a .250 hitting percentage, in St. Joseph's loss to Lehman College on Wednesday. Urshela followed that performance up with a monster game against HVIAC foe Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday in the opening match of a HVIAC tri-match, slamming down 22 kills while bringing up 15 digs for his first double-double of the year, hitting an impressive .286 along the way.

The junior ended the week with 14 kills and three digs versus four-time defending regular season champions Yeshiva University. During the match against the Maccabees, Urshela set a new school record for kills in a career, breaking the previous mark of 447 set by assistant coach Martin Torres. The outside hitter ended the week with an impressive 4.25 kills per set, hit .201 and averaged 1.92 digs per set.

Urshela has now earned three of the six Player of the Week accolades given out by the HVIAC this season and has now received the weekly honor six times in his career.

St. Joseph's (3-5) travels to SUNY Purchase on Thursday, March 13th for a 7 p.m. first serve.
