Men's Volleyball Loses to Yeshiva University, Then Rebounds to Top Webb

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -  The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team played resiliently throughout the match, but were ultimately defeated by Yeshiva University, 3-1 (18-25, 20-25, 26-24) at Brooklyn Technical High School Tuesday night, then bounced back to snap a five-game losing streak with a three-game sweep of Webb Institute (25-22, 25-18, 25-20) Wednesday night.

Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla/Colonial) paced the Bears (4-9) by combining for 28 kills in both matches, 14 in each match to add to his team-high 146 for the season. Iqbal Husain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) combined for 43 assists, 29 coming in Tuesday's loss to the Maccabees (5-9). Taso Kostikas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) combined for 30 digs and 13 kills in the two games.

Clyde Delacruz (Brooklyn, N.Y./Frederick Douglas H.S. Academy II) also contributed nine kills to go along with three blocks and four service aces in Wednesday's win over Webb. 

On Tuesday, the Bears were up 14-12 but Yeshiva rattled off a 9-0 run to take the first match 25-18. After another set loss to the Maccabees, the Bears rallied to take the third frame 26-24. In the fourth stanza, Yeshiva was up 20-16 but St. Joseph's bounced back to take a 22-21 advantage. However, after a timeout the Maccabees came back with four kills to take the match.

Adam Rhodes had a game-high 45 assists for the winning Maccabees. Menachem Goldstein and Jared Rechnitz also combined for 31 kills and 25 digs.

The win against the Webbies (1-1) moves St. Joseph's into second place in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Against Yeshiva, the Bears had 60 digs in a losing effort. Kostikas, Javier Bosque, and Urshela were in double-digits (19, 11, 10 respectively) in digs. 
  • The Bears also had a .102 hitting percentage (31 K-19 E-31 A) against the Maccabees. 
  • In the win against Webb, St. Joseph's outkilled the Webbies 35-18 (35 K-38 E- 21 A) and also had 48 digs to Webb's 3.
