Men's Volleyball Game Day: Bears vs. Brooklyn College & Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team looks to build some momentum with a two-game home stand at Brooklyn Technical High School this week. The Bears will host Brooklyn College (12-11) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night, then host Medgar Evers (0-17) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

vs. Brooklyn: St. Joseph's has yet to win against the Bulldogs throughout their existence with an 0-8 record, most recently losing in straight sets on March 15th.

vs. Medgar Evers: Medgar Evers and St. Joseph's are even at 6-6 in the all-time series dating back to March 5, 2009, but St. Joseph's has won the last five matchups including a 3-1 victory on February 19th.

Last Time Out: The Bears dropped their tenth match of the 2014 campaign with a hard-fought loss to John Jay, 3-1 (25-23, 25-15, 22-25, 25-17) at the John Jay gym Monday night.

Pacing St. Joseph's on the offensive end is three-time HVIAC Player of the Week Raul Urshela who has 158 kills on the year, good for 3.29 kills per set. The outside hitter also has a .157 hitting percentage and averages 0.49 blocks per set.

Contributing on the defensive end is sophomore Taso Kostikas who averages 3.00 digs per set and has 144 total digs on the year. The outside hitter also has compiled 19 service aces on the season.

Helping direct the offense is senior setter Iqbal Husain who averages 5.35 assists per set and has 257 total assists on the year.

In the Doghouse

Last Time Out: The Bulldogs fell to nationally-ranked #11 Baruch College in four sets, 3-1 (26-24, 25-15, 25-27, 25-17), last Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs are led on the offensive end by Antony Koyfman and Mihail Osipov. Both Koyfman and Ospiov in the top ten of the CUNYAC for kills (192 & 193, respectively). They are also both in the top ten of the conference in hitting percentage.

Providing support is Timothy Hui, who averages 6.34 assists per set and has 163 digs on the year. Hui also has distributed 520 assists so far this season.

Cub Scouting

Last Time Out: Medgar Evers dropped three matches against SUNYIT, Cazenovia University, and host Mount St. Vincent all in straight sets last Saturday.

The Cougars have dropped all 17 matches this season, including 11 matches in the CUNYAC. They have won one just set all season, a 25-20 set win against St. Joseph's February 19th.

Leading the Cougar offense is Austin Crawford, who has a team-high 107 kills on the season. Jamal Chance is behind him, chipping in 76 kills of his own. Crawford also paces Medgar Evers on the defensive end with a team-high 101 digs.

The primary setter for the Cougars is Angel Seda who has dished out 183 assists on the year and has 47 digs.
