Men's Volleyball Downed by John Jay and York in Tri-Match

NEW YORK—Facing a pair of CUNY foes for the second time this season, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team was unable to reverse the outcome of their earlier meeting falling in straight sets to John Jay College and dropping a 3-1 decision to York College on Saturday afternoon at The Doghouse.

Thomas Kennedy (Breezy Point, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) paced the Bears (8-7) with 22 kills and 21 digs over the tri-match, leading the team in both categories in both matches. The junior also recorded a double-double against York, his third of the season, with 14 kills and 12 digs and fell one dig shy of another double-double against John Jay.

Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) reached double figure kills against York and slammed 13 kills on the day also falling one dig shy of a double-double against York. Norrin Martinez (Maspeth, N.Y./Holy Cross) dished out 29 assists on the afternoon and landed a pair of aces.

In the opening match, John Jay (10-6) rode Yevgeniy Remennik's 11 kills and Juan DeJesus' 10 kills to hit .262 for the match, landing 39 kills in total. In a showdown of two of the top four teams in the nation in aces per set, five Bloodhounds combined to land 15 aces while the Bears could muster only two.

The hosts took early control of the first set and never relinquished the lead winning 25-17. St. Joseph's threatened in a back-and-forth second stanza that saw 11 ties and nine lead changes but came up just short falling 25-23 before the Bloodhounds ran away with the third set 25-11.

In the second match, York (13-14) took the opening set 25-20 before the Bears leveled the match with a 25-22 win in the second. But the Cardinals would clamp down and held the Bears to under 20 points in the final two frames, 25-15 and 25-19, to take the win in four.

St. Joseph's returns home to host Pratt Institute in a key Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Thursday, March 26 starting at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on SJCBears.com
