Men’s Volleyball Downed by Kean and Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team suffered a pair of straight-set setbacks to preseason favorite Kean University and host Purchase College in a Skyline Conference tri-match on Saturday morning.

Junior Alec Smalley (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) led the Bears with six kills on the day.

How It Happened vs. Kean

  • Kean remained undefeated in league play committing just four attack errors and hitting .642 for the match. The Bears trailed by just four, 9-5, in the opening set before the Cougars rolled off 16 straight points to win the opening set and never trailed or tied again.
  • Alec Smalley and Angelo Goutzinopoulos paced St. Joseph's with three kills each.
  • Thomas Ambrosino, McNeilsen Saint-Jean and Andre Williams chipped in a kill each.
  • Mark Antoun handed out an assist on all but one Bear kill.
  • Steven Zarzycki put away a match-high six kills in just one set played, leading 11 different players for Kean to record a kill.

How It Happened vs. Purchase

  • The Bears took their first and only lead of the match early in the third set on a Goutzinopoulos kill, but the Panthers used a 9-0 run after the third tie in the set to pull away for good.
  • Alec Smalley led the Bears attack again with three kills.
  • Angelo Goutzinopoulos and McNeilsen Saint-Jean chipped in two kills each. Saint-Jean also contributed a block and an ace.
  • Thomas Ambrosino and Mark Antoun both landed a kill. Ambrosino also adding a block and an ace and Antoun handing out seven assists.
 

Next Up for the Bears

  • St. Joseph's will conclude their first season under Mark Ledwich heading to Patchogue, N.Y. Sunday, April 9 for a tri-match with St. Joseph's College (Long Island) and Sarah Lawrence College starting at 10 a.m.
