Men’s Volleyball Concludes Season In Patchogue

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team wrapped up the first season under Head Coach Mark Ledwich dropping a pair of straight-set decisions to St. Joseph's College (Long Island) and Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday afternoon.

Junior Alec Smalley (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) led the attack with 11 kills and senior Angelo Goutzinopoulos (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) slammed nine kills over his final two games.

  • Angelo Goutzinopoulos slammed five kills and had two blocks to lead the Bears but the Golden Eagles hit .500 for the match and led or tied for all but two points.
  • Alec Smalley put away three kills, McNeilsen Saint-Jean had one kill and two blocks.
  • Mark Antoun directed the offense with nine assists and served up the lone Bear ace.
  • Will Flohr led Long Island with 11 kills and seven digs, both match highs.

How It Happened vs. Sarah Lawrence

  • In a match that determined eighth place in the final league standings, a tight opening set saw the Gryphons pull away at the 8-8 mark with 10 straight points and never trailed again for the rest of the match.
  • Despite five kills from Andre Williams in the second stanza, the Bears couldn't keep pace with Gryphons who committed just one error in the set and hit .478 as a team.
  • Alec Smalley led the Bears attack again with eight kills and served up an ace.
  • Andre Williams finished with five kills an assist and a dig.
  • Angelo Goutzinopoulos pounded four kills, brought up four digs and served an ace in his final match.
