Medgar Evers Tops Men’s Volleyball in Season Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In their first game of the 2018 season, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team hosted Medgar Evers College for a Thursday night matchup at The Hill Center. The Cougars pulled out a convincing three-set victory to start the season 1-0 and break a 12-game SJC win streak in the all-time series. For the Bears, senior McNeilsen Saint-Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) finished with a kill, an ace, an assist, and three digs. Classmate Alec Willis (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) notched a team-high four digs as well as an ace, while Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy and Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) picked up their first career kills in their debuts.

The match began tied 2-2, but the visitors reeled off a 14-1 run to take control 16-3. SJC responded with three-straight points highlighted by a Keyshawn Wright service ace, but they dropped the first set 25-9. The Bears gained their only lead of the night at the start of the second (4-1) but surrendered a 10-1 spurt to go down by six. After a Saint-Jean ace to bring his team back within two (11-9), MEC caught steam and won the frame 25-13. The third was no contest, as Medgar Evers finished on an 18-0 run to complete the sweep and pick up their first victory of 2018.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday (Jan. 30) at CCNY with first-serve set for 7 pm.
