Men's Volleyball Tripped Up by NJCU

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team journeyed to battle New Jersey City University but were swept in consecutive sets, 3-0.
This makes three straight losses for the Bears (0-3), as they are in the midst of a three-match road stretch. NJCU's improves to 3-4 and remains unbeaten in the all-time series.
Sophomore Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) led the Bears in kills with two and pitched in as many digs. Sophomore Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) showed up for the Bears in multiple statistical categories, slamming one kill, delivering one assist, stepping in for two digs, and also assisting on a team-high two blocks. Senior captain McNeilsen Saint-Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) anchored the defense with a team-high five digs, while also helping his teammates with one assist and one block assist.
Seven different Gothic Knights recorded a kill, led by Julian Moreira's and Joseph Stawicki's match-high seven kills each. Moreira also slammed eight service aces to go with two blocks. Jimmy Vega distributed very well for the Knights, assisting on 19 scores.
NJCU started the first set off leading by nine points, 12-3. SJC would respond with a 5-2 run, trailing by a mere six points, 14-8. However, a 7-0 run by the Knights propelled their advantage to 21-8, as they would take the first set.
A 2-2 tie began the second set, but the hosts ran off 18 straight points to take a two-set lead. The Bears earned their first lead of the match in the final set winning the opening point but an 11-2 spurt by the Knights allowed them to go back on top. Nonetheless, the Bears rallied with a 9-1 outburst, highlighted by two kills from Driscoll and another from Eddy to level the set at 12-all. Despite the Bears most competitive frame of the match, the Knights pulled away again with a 13-5 run, to close out the match.
The Bears will travel to the Bronx to face Lehman College on Wednesday, February 14. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
