Men’s Volleyball Struck by Lehman

BRONX, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's men's volleyball team traveled to their neighboring borough to take on Lehman College Wednesday night, but were swept in straight sets, 3-0.

The Bears (0-4) wrap up their three-game road stand still seeking their first win of the season, returning home for two out of their next three. Lehman College pushes their win streak to three and now sit 4-4 on the season.

Sophomore Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) carried the Bears tonight, as he posted team highs in three different statistical categories, slamming two kills, bringing up with four digs and adding the only service ace of the night for St. Joseph's. This makes three straight matches with at least one kill for Driscoll.

Junior Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) pitched in with one kill, one assist, and one block assist. Freshman Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) pounded one kill and assisted one block. The rookie now has put away a kill in three of his first four games.

Eight different Lightning recorded a kill, led by Mentor Mahmuti's six. Filipe Velandia distributed well for his team, dishing out 15 assists and landing six service aces. Peter Veljovic posted a match-high nine service aces to go with three kills. The hosts dominated from the baseline with 33 aces.

Lehman started the first match leading, 3-0, before a service error granted St. Joseph's their first point. After cutting the lead in half (4-2), the Lightning scored 14 unanswered to give them full control of the set, 18-2, and took the opening set, 25-7.

Three attack errors by Lehman to open the second stanza allowed St. Joseph's with their first lead of the match, 3-0. However, the Lightning would knot the game up 5-all, then take the lead, 6-5, on the strength of three aces. After going down by as many as eight (16-8), the Bears trimmed the deficit to five, 16-11, but four straight for the hosts, ended any comeback hopes.

Lehman seized control of the third set winning the first eight points and never looked back holding the Bears without a kill in a 25-6 win.
