Men's Volleyball Generates Highest Season Point Tally in Loss to Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Led by Stephen Eddy's (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) season-high four kills, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball produced their highest kill total of the season but came up short at home, falling 3-0 to borough rivals Brooklyn College, on Friday evening.

Several Bears had career highs in multiple statistical categories tonight as the team combined for 12 kills, doubling their previous season high. Sophomore Eddy pounded four kills and brought up four digs while freshman Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) slammed three kills and added a block.

Sophomore Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) stepped in for nine digs with three assists. Senior Alec Willis (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) also had a career-high two kills, two service aces, and four helpers.

Brooklyn (3-5) was led by Moaz Ali Choudhary who had a match-high eight kills, leading 11 different Bulldogs to tally a kill. Both Sayuj Zachariah and Michael Valentin handed out 15 assists each and directed the visitors to a .435 hitting night.

The Bulldogs gained an early 5-0 advantage before a Stephen Eddy kill put St. Joseph's on the board. Eddy would put away another kill later in the frame, but the Bulldogs took the first, 25-7.

A hot start to the second stanza, highlighted by two service aces by Willis and another kill by Eddy, gave the Bears a 5-0 lead, their largest cushion in any one set this season. However, Brooklyn matched their efforts and tied the set at 7-all. They later took a 15-8 lead after an 8-1 run and closed out the set on top, 25-14.

The Bulldogs took an early 7-3 lead in the final set before a Willis kill sparked a 3-0 run to pull St. Joseph's within one, 7-6. But a 10-4 run put the set out of reach again, however, the Bears had their most productive frame of the season totaling 16 points with six kills at a .200 clip. Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) led the way with two kills and four other Bears pitching in a kill.

The Bears (0-5) look to avenge the loss in their season opener facing Brooklyn rival Medgar Evers on Thursday, February 22. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
