Men’s Volleyball Defeats Sarah Lawrence to Split Regular Season Finale

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Powered by a pair of double-doubles from sophomores Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) and Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team kept their playoff hopes alive defeating Sarah Lawrence College, 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-12), before falling to host College of Mount Saint Vincent, 3-0 (25-11, 25-7, 25-10), on Saturday afternoon at the Peter Jay Sharp Center.

Driscoll led the Bears (3-15, 3-6 Skyline) in the final matches of the 2018 season. The reigning Skyline Rookie of the Week posted 19 total kills (career-high 16 vs Sarah Lawrence), three service aces, 13 digs, and three assists. Eddy had a game to remember versus Sarah Lawrence, slamming a career-high 11 kills and recording his first career double-double, logging 12 digs in back-to-back performances (24 total), and seven assists on the day.  

Junior Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) registered 10 total kills (7 vs Sarah Lawrence), 16 digs, two service aces and three blocks (two solos, one assist). Seniors Alec Willis (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and Keyshawn Wright (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse) both played well to cap off their first and final season for men's volleyball. Willis smashed seven kills, facilitated 32 assists (27 vs Sarah Lawrence), three service aces, 13 digs, and had six total blocks (a career-high 3 solo blocks vs Sarah Lawrence). Wright finished strong, pounding his first kills of the season (2 total), while also stepping in for four digs and one block.

Sarah Lawrence (0-21, 0-9 Skyline) was led by Harris Silcott and Divij Kapoor, who both managed 10 kills apiece. Silcott added 18 digs and five assists, while Kapoor had an additional two services aces and seven digs.

Mount Saint Vincent (13-13, 8-1 Skyline) was directed by Scott Sawyer, Jordan Steiger, and Owen Smith. Sawyer had 11 kills, two service aces, and 10 digs. Steiger generated eight kills, two service aces, and six digs. Owen Smith produced nine kills.

The Bears first taste of action was against Sarah Lawrence. Despite dropping the first set (25-20), the Bears would rally in the next three. A 4-0 run led by Driscoll (one kill, one service ace) in the second set helped the Bears break an 18-18 tie and eventually gave them their first set win.

The Bears jumped out to an eight-point lead (19-11) in the second, with great overall team chemistry (five Bears with at least one kill) and went on to seize the set, 25-18. They followed that up in the third with one of their better sets played this season, convincingly taking care of Sarah Lawrence, 25-12.

With their regular season complete, the Bears will await the outcome of the Yeshiva vs. Sarah Lawrence match on Tuesday. SJC will clinch their first Skyline Championship and enter as the No. 4 seed with a Yeshiva loss.
