BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team took two straight-set losses at home to Ramapo College and the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon in a Skyline Conference tri-match.
Ramapo (9-7, 5-0) defeated the Bears, 3-0 (25-6, 25-11, 25-13), to sweep the season series and CMSV (3-5, 3-1) downed SJC, 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-21), meeting for the second time in five days.
How it Happened vs. Ramapo
SJC won the opening point of the match for their lone lead, but couldn't slow down the league-unbeaten Roadrunners who combined to hit for 33 kills in the match and held the Bears to just six kills. Ramizjon Khudoyorov (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) led the attack with four kills also adding a solo block. Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) added a pair of kills and also brought up a team-high seven digs.
How it Happened vs. Mount Saint Vincent
The opening set was back and forth with six ties and four lead changes as neither team could build more than a two-point advantage. With the Bears leading 9-8, CMSV won seven straight to take control of the frame.
SJC fell behind in the second stanza and trailed by as many as eight at 20-12 before making a late surge going on a 9-3 run to pull within two, 23-21, but the Dolphins held off the comeback bid.
The Bears trailed throughout the third but remained within reach never falling behind by more than five. SJC tried another late comeback bid pulling within three at 23-20, but couldn't force an extra frame.
Khudoyorov paced the offense with nine kills and nine digs to go along with two blocks (one solo. Matthew Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) logged six kills against one error for a .357 hitting game. Alex Helfant chipped in three kills and seven digs. Lordnel Saint-Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) had two kills, six digs and two blocks.
