Men’s Volleyball Halted by Skyline Leaders St. Joseph’s Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team saw their two-match winning run halted by sibling school St. Joseph's (Long Island) in straight sets on Thursday evening (6-25, 6-25, 11-25).

How it Happened

The Golden Eagles (15-7, 9-0) opened the match with 13 unanswered points before the Bears (5-10, 4-5) got on the board. SJLI took the set 25-6. Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) served up an ace and Frank Tello (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) logged a kill in the period.

Helfant picked up an early kill in the second set but it wasn't enough as the hosts repeated the first-set scoreline, 25-6.

The third set was highlighted by a kill and block from Tello – with Frank Arevalo (Astoria, N.Y./Gramercy Arts) assisting Tello on the block – and Keiran McMullan's (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) service ace. The Golden Eagles ultimately claimed the 25-11 set win and 3-0 match.

For the Bears

  • McMullan had five digs while Helfant and Leonel Bravo (Astoria, N.Y./Queens Vocational & Technical) had four.

  • Tello and Arevalo each had two blocks.

  • Levin Ma (Brooklyn, N.Y./Port Richmond) had three assists.
