Men's Volleyball Falls to New Jersey City in Straight Sets

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's volleyball dropped their penultimate match of the season to New Jersey City University, 0-3 (13-25, 19-25, 11-25), on Tuesday evening from The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The first set with an 8-8 tie as both sides traded points. The Gothic Knights amazed an 11-1 run to clear themselves from the Bears en route to a 25-13 win. Lordnel Saint-Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Frank Arevalo (Astoria, N.Y./Gramercy Arts) combined for four kills in the period.

The second set was the closest of the three, seeing eight ties and three lead changes. Following an early timeout, a service ace from Levin Ma (Brooklyn, N.Y./Port Richmond) and miscues from NJCU saw the Bears lead 9-7 after trailing 5-2. Down 17-16, the Gothic Knights used a 7-0 spurt to lead 23-17 before taking the set 25-19.

New Jersey City took full control of the third set, leading by as many as 20-7 and winning the frame 25-11.

For the Bears

  • Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) led the SJBK attack with seven kills, followed by Arevalo with four and Saint-Jean with three.
  • Leonel Bravo (Astoria, N.Y./Queens Vocational & Technical) and Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) had match-highs of eight digs and 16 assists, respectively. 
  • Frank Tello (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) had a pair of blocks.
