BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College softball combined for 22 runs on 13 hits in a sweep of York College 12-4, 10-2 on Thursday afternoon at National Grid Softball Field. The Lady Bears improve to 7-5 and snap a five-game skid while the Cardinals fall to 0-8.
Sophomore pitcher/third-baseman Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis) led the Lady Bears over the two-game set collecting four runs, three hits, two doubles and two RBIs and earned a her third win of the season, striking out seven.
Jillian Troise (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney), Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis), Jackie Marinello (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall) and Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) each picked up a pair of hits. Lauren Norris (Sunnyside, NY/Long Island City) drove in four runs and Emily Palmieri (Staten Island, NY/St. John's Villa) drove in three, each scoring three times.
Brittany Patalano and Joviette Frederick led York College each picking up a pair of hits for the series. The Cardinals committed 13 errors leading to 16 unearned runs over the two contests.
St. Joseph's returns to action on Saturday, April 3rd travelling to Patchogue, NY to square off in a non-conference doubleheader against sibling campus St. Joseph's-Long Island scheduled to begin at noon.
Game 1 – St. Joseph's 12, York 4
St. Joseph's scored three runs in the first inning highlighted by a Norris, two-out, two-RBI double. The Lady Bears broke the game open plating eight runs in the second frame, of which only one was earned on two York miscues. St. Joseph's added a single tally in the fourth inning to build a 12-0 advantage.
Chiaramonte held York to only one baserunner over the first four frames, issuing a walk in the second inning. She stumbled in the final inning, allowing five hits with York scoring four runs in the frame (two earned), but not enough to extend the game.
Chiaramonte improved to 4-2 in the circle, striking out five and walking one. Marinello and Troise each had a pair of base knocks and drove in a pair of runs.
Game 2 – St. Joseph's 10, York 2
The game remained tight through three innings, with St. Joseph's leading 2-1 after three innings. The Lady Bears broke then pulled away from York two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and four in the sixth, scoring their final eight runs on three hits, benefitting from eight York errors over the three frames.
After allowing an unearned run in the first, Scheer settled in the circle and held York scoreless, limiting the Cardinals to only two more hits. York picked up their other run off the game off Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) who came in to pitch the sixth inning.
Scheer improved to 3-3 in the circle, allowing one unearned run, striking out seven and walking none. Sheer helped her own cause at the plate going 3-for-4, driving in two and scoring twice.
