Lady Bears Cruise Past New Rochelle in HVWAC Sweep

BRONXVILLE, NY – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team continued their dominance of Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference opposition with a sweep of the College of New Rochelle, 15-0 and 14-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the Mary Levine Field at Sarah Lawrence College.

St. Joseph's now stands at 11-6 and rides an 11 game winning streak.  The Lady Bears also improve to 22-0 in the all-time series versus the Blue Angels.

Senior Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) dominated inside the circle in game one tossing a one-hit shutout, retiring 14 of 16 batters faced by strikeout, her 14 K's a career second-best and the most by a Lady Bear in a five-inning affair.  Chiaramonte improved to 8-3 with her fifth shutout of the season, a category which she was ranked tied for 28th in Division III in the latest report released earlier today.

The Lady Bears got all the offense they would need posting eight runs in the opening frame, and rapped out 11 hits in the contest led by senior Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) who had a 3-for-4 game with three RBI, two runs and her first homer of the season. Junior Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis) knocked a pair of hits, scored twice and tallied her fourth-career three RBI game.

Freshman Jackie Perillo (Howard Beach, NY/Archbishop Molloy) had two hits and had a game-high four runs. Fellow freshmen Vanessa Alonzo (Wichita, TX/John Hirschi HS) and Cassandra Molinari (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep), named HVWAC Rookie of the Week earlier today, each had two RBI.

In the nightcap, the Lady Bears were powered by junior Mabel Vargas (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) who had a career-high four-hit game, extending her hitting streak to a team-leading nine games. Vargas scored three times and drove in a run.  Classmate Millicia Malvasio (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) knocked a double to extend her hitting streak to seven games and had a pair of sacrifice flies compiling a career-high four RBI game.

The Lady Bears plated a pair of runs in the first and after a scoreless second inning, broke the game open with big frames in the third and fourth innings, to take a commanding 12-1 lead.

Senior Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis) leveled her record to 3-3 in the circle, striking out eight, matching a season-high and walking one.  Scheer tossed her second one-hitter of the season, and helped her own cause at the plate with a 2-for-2 game, two runs and a RBI.

Senior Emily Palmieri (Staten Island, NY/St. John's Villa) knocked a double with two RBI, her first multi-RBI game of the season, and a run scored.  Marino and Perillo rapped a pair of hits to finish with back-to-back multi-hit games. Alonzo scored three runs.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Friday, April 13th, concluding their HVWAC schedule with a home doubleheader against Sarah Lawrence College at Padavan-Preller Field starting at 4:15 p.m. (please note later start time).
