Lady Bears Sweep HVWAC Softball Honors; Vargas Player, Randazzo Rookie of the Week

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Recognizing their outstanding performance on the field in helping lead the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team to their first win of the season, Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) has been named Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Player of the Week while teammate Maria Randazzo (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall) was tabbed Rookie of the Week.

Vargas led the Lady Bears during their season-opening Florida trip at the Gene Cusic Classic going 6-for-15 (.400) at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored over the six-game stretch. The senior outfielder/pitcher picked up St. Joseph's first victory of the season in the circle going five innings against the University of Dallas, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits and helped her own cause at the plate by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Randazzo went 3-for-10 (.300) at the plate during the Lady Bears season-opening Florida trip including a triple in her first collegiate at bat against Drew University. The freshman left fielder finished the six-game trip with three runs scored and gunned down a runner at home plate against Medaille.

The HVWAC Player of the Week honor is the first earned by Vargas in her career. However, she was named HVWAC Rookie of the Week her freshman year. Randazzo takes home Rookie of the Week for the first time in her career in the first weekly award installment from the conference.

St. Joseph's (1-5) returns to New York to open their home slate with a non-conference doubleheader against Mount Saint Vincent on Friday, March 22nd at Padavan-Preller Field with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
