Vargas and Quintana Sweep AD3I and HVWAC Softball Honors

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – In recognition of their outstanding performances last week, St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) senior pitcher/outfielder Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) has been named Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) Softball Player of the Week and Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Pitcher of the Week while teammate Christina Quintana (Brooklyn, NY/ St. Edmund Prep) received HVWAC Player of the Week honors.

Vargas pitched ten shutout innings against York picking up wins in both ends of the doubleheader. She went the distance in game one against the Cardinals, allowing only two hits while fanning four in a 4-0 victory. In the nightcap, the junior went three innings, allowed just two hits and struck out another two in a 14-5 win. Vargas also went 2-for-6 (.333)  at the plate helping her own cause with two runs scored.

Quintana, a junior outfielder for the Lady Bears, went 3-for-4 (.750) at the plate collecting five RBI, two runs scored and two doubles helping St. Joseph's to a doubleheader sweep of York. The junior had her best game of the week in game two against the Cardinals as she went 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs. Quintana is currently batting a team-leading .545 with six RBI.

Vargas was is no stranger to AD3I honors as she was named to the Association's All-Independent Second Team her freshman year. As for Quintana, this is her first HVWAC Player of the Week honor of her three-year career.

The St. Joseph's Lady Bears have now won four in a row improving to (5-7) on the season. This week they will go on the road with two games at John Jay this afternoon before returning home on Thursday, April 4th to take on New Rochelle in a double dip at Padavan-Preller Field with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
