Perillo Fires No-Hitter, Vargas Tosses One-Hitter in Softball Sweep of New Rochelle

BELLEROSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Jackie Perillo (Howard Beach, NY/Archbishop Molloy) flirted with a perfect game and the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team rang out 27 hits over a 9-0 and 14-0 doubleheader sweep of The College of New Rochelle on Thursday afternoon at Padavan-Preller Field.

The Lady Bears (7-8-1) extend their home winning streak to six games and remain undefeated (24-0) in the all-time series against the Blue Angels (2-10).

Perillo retired the first 13 batters before issuing a walk, her only blemish in the five inning affair. Perillo finished with a career-best six strikeouts in the 16th no-hitter in school history.

Senior Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning before a bloop single spoiled the bid, finishing with five strikeouts. She also contributed at the dish with a 3-for-4 day, with four RBI, two runs, a double and a triple.

The Lady Bears used big frames early to seize control, posting seven runs in the second inning of the opener and eight in the first inning of the nightcap.

All 13 Lady Bears contributed to the hit parade, with 10 tallying at least two base knocks over the twinbill led by Cassandra Molinari (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) who went 5-for-7 with three RBI, two runs and a pair of doubles. Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis) and Andrea Sideli (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) both homered and drove in three runs apiece.

Turning Point – Game 1

St. Joseph's drew two walks to lead off the second inning and parlayed it into a seven run frame. Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's Academy) started the scoring with a bases-loaded walk and a two-out, two-RBI triple from Vargas highlighted the frame.

Turning Point – Game 2

The Lady Bears got off to a quick start knocking three straight hits in the first, Marino opening the scoring with a two-RBI triple and Sideli blasting a three-run home run two batters later. St. Joseph's would load the bases again before Molinari cleared them with a double that put the Lady Bears ahead 8-0.

Inside the Box Scores

  • On the six-game week to date, Vargas is hitting 8-for-12 with eight RBI, seven runs, three triples, three doubles and six walks. She also has an active nine-game reached base safely streak and four-game hitting streak.
