Softball Falls in Extras in Sweep by Mount Saint Vincent

BRONX, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team scored a solo run in the top half of the eighth inning of the second game of a doubleheader with the College of Mount Saint Vincent, but couldn't earn a split surrendering two runs in the bottom half falling 3-0 and 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Bears (0-8) remain winless on the season while the Dolphins (9-2) match their win total from 2013 and extend their winning streak to five.

St. Joseph's couldn't generate any offense against Dolphin starter Mackenzie Heizer who fanned nine in the one-hit shutout. Kristin Ferrigno's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) single to start the second and Jamilynn McGowan's (Staten Island, N.Y./Michael J. Petrides) walk were the lone baserunners surrendered by Heizer. The Dolphins rapped out five straight two-out singles in the third for all the scoring in the opener.

Lady Bears starter Jackie Perillo (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) took the loss in the circle with an otherwise clean effort scattering just two hits across the other five scoreless innings and surrendering seven hits overall.

In the nightcap, a Cassandra Molinari (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) two-out base knock in the third knotted the game at 1-1 and neither team scored through the remainder of regulation.

The Dolphins threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lady Bears cut down Joanna Makayan trying to score from second on a Samantha Rossi (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis) to Ferrigno to Molinari relay to send the game into extra innings.

Rossi then delivered St. Joseph's first lead in the series in the first extra frame with a one-out double that scored McGowan who started the inning on second by international extra inning rule.

St. Joseph's gunned down another runner at home in the home half of the eighth with another outfield relay initiated by Maria Randazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) that preserved the lead but a two-out error allowed the tying run to score and placed runners on second and third for Brittany Lee who gave the Dolphins the walk-off win with a two-out single.

McGowan tossed 7 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits and allowed three runs (one earned) in the loss.
