McGowan Fires One-Hit Shutout as Softball Overwhelms New Rochelle

BELLEROSE, N.Y. – Freshman Jamilynn McGowan (Staten Island, N.Y./Michael J. Petrides) fired a one-hit shutout and the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team pounded out 18 hits on their way to a 14-0 five-inning victory over Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) opponent The College of New Rochelle in their home opener on Friday afternoon at Padavan-Preller Field.

The second game between the two teams was called off due to inclement weather and poor field conditions.

St. Joseph's (1-8, 1-0 HVIAC) picks up their first win of the season following eight consecutive losses to start the year, while New Rochelle (0-14, 0-1 HVIAC) remains winless.

McGowan was sharp right from the start in the rainy conditions, setting down the Blue Angels in order in the opening frame and allowed the lone hit of the day in the second. The freshman fanned a career-high eight batters and picked up her first collegiate win in the circle, improving to 1-4 on the season.

The Lady Bears left little doubt in who was going to come out on top and gave McGowan all the run support she needed as they sent 16 batters to the plate in their first at bat with 11 runs scoring on 11 hits to take an 11-0 lead after one inning of play. The inning started off with five straight singles with junior Cassandra Molinari (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) recording an RBI single and freshman Kristin Ferrigno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) coming up with a two-RBI single.

The Lady Bears scored nine runs before the first out of the inning was recorded and the duo of Molinari and Ferrigno teamed up to drive in five of the runs during the 11-run inning.

In the ensuing New Rochelle at bat, Genesis Garcia would lead off the inning with a base hit, but that would be the best contact they got off of McGowan who would have her way with the Blue Angels' batters in the difficult weather conditions.

The St. Joseph's bats looked for more in the bottom half of the second and they found it, scoring two more runs on back-to-back RBI singles from sophomore Maria Randazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) and Molinari to take a commanding 13-0 lead.

A run in the third for the Lady Bears built the lead to 14-0 and McGowan secured the shutout, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth and got around a lead-off walk in the fifth to finish it off.

Molinari went 3-for-3 on the day with three RBI and a run scored, one of three Lady Bears to record three base knocks on the afternoon. Ferrigno also batted 3-for-3 and drove in three runs and scored a run. Randazzo finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs, while freshman Samantha Simon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) capped off the day going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

McGowan helped her cause at the dish going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Fellow freshman Geena Campisi (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) ended up the day going 2-for-3 with a run and drove in a run. Junior Shannon Rom (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) also contributed going 2-for-3 with a run.
