Softball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader to Borough Rival Brooklyn College

BELLEROSE, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of borough rival Brooklyn College on Thursday afternoon at Padavan-Preller Field, dropping the opener 20-2 and the nightcap 16-2, both in five innings.

St. Joseph's (9-15) sees their two-game winning streak come to a halt, while Brooklyn (24-12) sets a school record for wins in a season and has won five of their last six.

After a scoreless first inning in the opener, it looked like the Lady Bears may be able to hang with the Bulldogs, but that all changed as Brooklyn plated five runs in the second off St. Joseph's starter Jackie Perillo (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) to take a 5-0 lead.

The Lady Bears responded with a run in the second on a sophomore Maria Randazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) sacrifice fly and one in the third on a freshman Kristin Ferrigno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) RBI single to left field to make it 5-2. However, the Bulldogs plated a run in the fourth to make it 6-2 and ended any doubt of the outcome with a huge 14-run inning in the top of the fifth to distance themselves from the Lady Bears and cruise to the victory.

Perillo had a tough day in the circle for St. Joseph's allowing 20 runs (19 earned) on 14 hits in five innings of work and took the loss to fall to 5-7.

The second game was no different for the Lady Bears as Brooklyn jumped on starter freshman Jamilynn McGowan (Staten Island, N.Y./Michael J. Petrides) for seven runs in the top of the first and would score at least one run in each of the next four innings to secure the sweep.

After trailing 12-0, St. Joseph's was able to end the shutout bid as freshman Samantha Rossi (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis) connected on an RBI single to left field to bring home freshman Madeline Moravek (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep).

The Lady Bears were able to scrape across a second run in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by junior Cassandra Molinari (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) that scored Perillo, but the hits were few and far between in the nightcap and St. Joseph's could not contain the Brooklyn offensive attack.

McGowan concluded the day surrendering 16 runs (12 earned) on 17 hits and finished with four strikeouts to fall to 4-8 on the year.

Rossi led the way for the Lady Bears at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, while Molinari ended up 2-for-6 with a run batted in. Ferrigno came through with a 2-for-6 day with an RBI. Perillo contributed at the plate with a 2-for-5 afternoon with a run scored.
