Softball Closes Regular Season Against St. Joseph's (L.I.) on Saturday and Goes for Seventh Straight HVIAC Title on Sunday

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team (20-14) will conclude their regular season with the "East vs. West" matchup against St. Joseph's (L.I.) on Saturday. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.

The next day, the No. 1 Lady Bears will embark on their quest for a seventh consecutive Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title, meeting Sarah Lawrence College in the semifinal at 5 p.m. If victorious, St. Joseph's will play for the championship against the winner of No. 2 Yeshiva University and No. 3 The College of New Rochelle.

vs. St. Joseph's (L.I.): The Golden Eagles boast a slight 7-5 edge in the rivalry.

vs. Sarah Lawrence: In the all-time series that dates back to May 1, 2005, the Lady Bears are a perfect 23-0 against Sarah Lawrence, including a 14-1 triumph in the HVWAC Invitational championship game on May 5, 2013.

vs. Yeshiva: St. Joseph's is unbeaten in five meetings with Yeshiva. In 2013, the sides squared off in the HVWAC Invitational semifinals with St. Joseph's shutting out Yeshiva 12-0. Last year, the Lady Bears silenced the Maccabees 14-1 in the HVIAC Tournament final and, two days later, claimed the Regular Season title with a 13-0 shutout. St. Joseph's continued their dominance this season, sweeping Yeshiva 19-11 and 12-0 on May 24.

vs. New Rochelle: The Lady Bears have overwhelmed New Rochelle 34-0 in a series that dates back to 2003. A perfect 4-0 against the Blue Angels this season, St. Joseph's triumphed in all four meetings between the two sides in 2014 as well, including the HVIAC Tournament semifinal matchup.

vs. St. Joseph's (L.I.): On May 2, 2013, the Golden Eagles swept the Lady Bears in Patchogue, N.Y., clipping Brooklyn 6-4 in game one and blanking their rivals 11-0 in the nightcap to claim a 7-5 edge in the series history.

vs. Sarah Lawrence: On April 27, 2014, St. Joseph's dealt the Gryphons a doubleheader sweep, 9-0 and 12-0, in an HVIAC clash. Jackie Perillo and Jamilynn McGowan each spun complete-game one-hitters as the Lady Bears' offense slammed 24 hits in a dominant afternoon.

vs. Yeshiva: St. Joseph's remained in first place in the HVIAC with a sweep over the Maccabees on April 24. Reaching a season-high offensive output, the Lady Bears won a game-one shootout 19-11. Jamilynn McGowan tossed a complete-game shutout in game two as St. Joseph's blanked Yeshiva 12-0 to finish off the sweep.

Lady Bears Last Time Out

On Monday, the Lady Bears tossed back-to-back one-hitters in blanking New Rochelle 10-0 and 13-0, both in five innings, to reach the 20-win mark for the first time since the 2012 season.

Riding 10 insurance runs, Theresa Armano coasted to a dominant one-hit shutout in the opener. The freshman improved to 10-7 in the circle. Sophomore Kristen Ferrigno, sophomore Samantha Rossi, junior Maria Randazzo and freshman Maria Gentile all recorded three-hit performances at the plate, while sophomore Samantha Simon drove in a game-high three RBI.

Game two played out similarly to the opener as the Lady Bears crafted their lead in the first three innings while keeping the Blue Angels silent on offense. St. Joseph's put forth a four-run first inning to claim another early advantage. Jackie Perillo got the Lady Bears on the scoreboard with a run-scoring double, the 100th hit of the senior's career.

Sophomore Jamilynn McGowan fanned eight batters and surrendered just one hit in four scoreless innings to earn her ninth win of the season. Perillo and Armano paved the way on offense in game two, each collecting a game-high three hits to go along with a pair of RBI.

Ferrigno and McGowan Claim Weekly Awards

In the final HVIAC weekly awards of the season announced on Tuesday, sophomore Kristin Ferrigno was named Player of the Week and fellow sophomore Jamilynn McGowan was honored as Pitcher of the week.

In a 3-3 week, Ferrigno was the catalyst for the Lady Bears offense batting .500 (9-for-18) out of the leadoff spot with a .571 on-base percentage. Over a crucial USCAA Top 10 doubleheader with Briarcliffe, she batted 6-for-7 and scored four times. 

McGowan compiled a 2-1 record in the circle with a 4.28 ERA. The sophomore tossed two complete games, including one shutout, and struck out 12.

Ferrigno receives Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career having received Rookie of the Week honors twice last season. McGowan was a two-time Pitcher of the Week last season and receives the accolade for the first time this season.

Inside the Eagles Nest

St. Joseph's (L.I.) (16-18) has dropped seven consecutive contests to fall below .500. Saturday will mark the regular season finale for both sides as the Golden Eagles seek to snap their skid and claim bragging rights against their sister campus rivals and future Skyline Conference foes.

Senior Julianne Tierney has been a force in the batter's box, blasting a team-high nine homeruns to go along with 24 RBI and a .400 batting average. Paced by Tierney, the Golden Eagles' powerful offense has connected for 20 homeruns this season.

Junior Megan Leun has been the team's primary run producer, driving in 25 RBI, while fellow junior Lindsey Corriss claims a lethal .433 batting average.

In the circle, junior Mallory McClafferty leads the Golden Eagles in wins (6), starts (14), innings (75.2) and strikeouts (55).

St. Joseph's (L.I.) Last Time Out

On Wednesday, the Golden Eagles dropped a pair of tight pitchers' duels at Staten Island, falling 6-5 in the opener and 4-2 in game two.

Welcome to Gryphondor

The streaking Gryphons (5-25) capped off their regular season on a positive note, sweeping Valley Forge on Saturday and New Rochelle on Wednesday. With a 7-6 triumph over Yeshiva on April 14, three of Sarah Lawrence's five victories this season came against HVIAC opponents.

Freshman Kamaron McNair carries the Gryphons on offense with a team leading 27 RBI. Fellow first-year player Riley Vuyovich has hit safely in more than half of her at bats (35-65) for a team leading .538 batting average. Vuyovich also holds claim to the team's only homerun.

To go along with her offensive production, McNair also carries a heavy load on the defensive end. The freshman has started 24 of the team's 30 games, compiling a 5-19 record with 20 complete games and 69 strikeouts.

Sarah Lawrence Last Time Out

On Wednesday, the Gryphons handled potential HVIAC Tournament foe New Rochelle 12-4 and 15-5 at Flowers Park, New Rochelle.

Mac Attack

Yeshiva (5-13) split their HVIAC meetings this season, clipping New Rochelle 4-3 on April 22 before dropping a 19-11 shootout to the Lady Bears two days later. On Sunday, the Maccabees will be looking to avenge 2014's losses in the HVIAC Tournament and Regular Season finals, both at the hands of St. Joseph's.

Senior Erin Potasnick (16 RBI) and junior Rachel Mirsky (13 RBI) pace an offense that has struggled to find consistency. Mirsky also leads the Maccabees with a .400 batting average and three victories in the circle.

Yeshiva Last Time Out

After winning three of their previous five, Yeshiva was controlled 15-0 and 13-2 by Drew University on Tuesday.

Angels in the Outfield

Now 0-12, the Blue Angels will be playing the Cinderella role on Sunday. They'll also be seeking to avenge last season's 18-0 defeat at the hands of the Lady Bears in the HVIAC Tournament semifinal.

New Rochelle has struggled on offense, batting .151 while averaging 2.95 runs per contest. Freshman Kevona Jackson and junior Sheila Conde lead the way with seven RBI apiece. Conde has also started a team-high 13 games in the circle, compiling 46 strikeouts in 64.1 innings.

New Rochelle Last Time Out

The Blue Angels dropped a pair of home contests to potential tournament foe Sarah Lawrence on Wednesday, falling 12-4 and 15-5.
