BRONX, N.Y. — Junior Samantha Rossi (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis) joined the coveted 100-hit club, freshman Nicole Quintana (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) drove in six runs, junior Kristin Ferrigno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kennedy) went yard for the first time in her career and junior Jamilynn McGowan (Staten Island, N.Y./Michael J. Petrides) fired her second one-hitter as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team outscored Lehman College 20-0 over a non-conference doubleheader road sweep on Thursday afternoon.

How it Happened - Game 1

  • After a scoreless first two innings, the Lady Bears created one in the third for the early lead. Theresa Armano reached with a one-out single, advanced to third on consecutive wild pitches, and eventually reached home on an error.
  • St. Joseph's added two insurance runs in the fourth inning on Nicole Quintana's two-RBI single and then broke the game open in the fifth with a five-hit, five-run outburst. Kristin Ferrigno highlighted the rally with a two-run homer and Samantha Simon added a bases loaded single to plate two more.
  • In the bottom half, Armano capped off a four-hit, complete-game shutout for the game one win.

How it Happened - Game 2

  • The Lady Bears picked off where they left off, taking advantage of two defensive miscues in the first inning to claim an early lead. Samantha Rossi lifted a sacrifice fly that put St. Joseph's up 2-0.
  • After tacking on one more in the second on a Quintana RBI single, St. Joseph's erupted for eight hits and nine runs in the top of the third inning to put the game out of reach. Kristin Ferrigno kicked off the party with a two-RBI double followed by run scoring singles from Destiny Marino, Stephanie Rancel, Samantha Simon, Nicole Quintana and Theresa Armano. Maria Gentile and Ania Smith earned RBI-walks to cap the rally.
  • In the fourth inning, Samantha Rossi's two-out single to the opposite field highlighted a 2-for-2 game and punched her ticket into the 100-hit club.
  • Starter Jamilynn McGowan faced just three batters over the minimum, striking out five in a one-hitter that cemented the sweep..

For the Lady Bears

  • Nicole Quintana (5-for-7, 6 RBI, 2 R) and Destiny Marino (5-for-7, RBI, 4 R) lumbered five hits apiece on the afternoon to lead all players. Quintana led the way with six RBI, three in each end of the twinbill.
  • Kristin Ferrigno (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, 2B) connected for her first collegiate homer in game one and ended the day with three RBI.
  • Theresa Armano (3-for-7, RBI, 2 R, 2B) connected for three hits and Samantha Simon (2-for-8, 3 RBI, 2 R) plated three more for the Lady Bears.
  • Starter Theresa Armano (5.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 6 SO) tossed five shutout innings in the opener to improve to 6-9 in the circle, while Jamilynn McGowan (5.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 5 SO) spun a one-hitter to improve to 7-12.

For the Lightning

  • Linda Resto (2-for-4, 2B) was the only Lightning player to collect multiple hits, connecting for one in each end of the doubleheader.
  • Meghan Bravo (10.0 IP, 14 ER, 5 SO) started both games and tossed the full 10 innings for Lehman, but suffered both losses.

  • St. Joseph's out-slugged Lehman 25-5 for a 20-0 scoring advantage.
  • The Lady Bears' defense was perfect for all day, assembling four consecutive games without an error. The Lightning committed five miscues that allowed six unearned runs to cross home.

  • McGowan's shutout was her third of the season and eighth of her career. In addition to tossing her second one-hitter of the season, she is now working on 13 consecutive scoreless innings in the circle.
