Softball Dominates Brooklyn College in Return to the Diamond

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In their first action in the northeast in nearly four weeks, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team posted 35 runs over a 17-1, 18-2 doubleheader sweep of borough rivals Brooklyn College on Thursday evening.

Freshman Amber Wainwright (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) led 10 different players to finish with at least two hits on the night finishing 6-for-8 with seven RBI and five runs scored. Senior Samantha Rossi (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis) drove in six runs on three hits and sophomore Nicole Quintana (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) homered in game two.

  • The Bears overwhelmed the Bulldogs sending 18 batters to the plate in the first inning and scoring 13 runs to take a stranglehold on the game. RBI doubles from Amber Wainwright and Destiny Marino and a two-run, bases-loaded single by Samantha Rossi highlighted the baker's dozen frame.
  • Sophomore Victoria Mahoney improved to 4-0 in the circle with a dominant start, retiring all nine batters she faced, striking out five.
  • The Bears tacked on another run in the second and three more in the fourth, highlighted by Sarah Kampuries two-out, two-run single.
  • A two-out single by Breana Maresca plated the lone run for the Bulldogs in the fourth.

Game 2: St. Joseph's 18, Brooklyn 2 (5 innings)

  • SJC Starters: Csikortos (DP), Rancel (RF), Wainwright (C), Ferrigno (3B), Rossi (LF), Marino (CF), Gentile (1B), Quintana (2B), Simon (SS), Armano (P)
  • St. Joseph's piled on runs in all five innings, using a six-run second and a four-run third to take a commanding 13-2 lead after three. Wainwright knocked a two-run single and Quintana laced an inside-the-park homer in the big second stanza.
  • Theresa Armano earned the win in the circle allowing two runs on three hits in three innings, striking out four and walking two. Nicole Boudouris knocked a two-out, two-run triple spoil the shutout in the third, before Erhardt entered the circle to work two innings of one-hit ball to seal the sweep.
  • Paige Csikortos led off the fourth with a triple and later scored on a Wainwright sac fly and knocked a two-run double in the fifth as St. Joseph's added five more in their final two at-bats.

SJC Highlights

  • The Bears combined for 22 hits—their most since knocking 21 against New Rochelle in April 2014. Eight of their hits went for extra bases.
  • All nine starting batters knocked a hit with seven rapping multiple hits.
  • Amber Wainwright finished 3-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored.
  • Paige Csikortos also went 3-for-3 with five runs scored, two RBI, two doubles and a triple.
  • Destiny Marino (3-for-4, 2 RBI, R, 2B), Maria Gentile (3-for-4, RBI), Nicole Quintana (3-for-4, RBI, 2 R, 2B) all finished with three hits each.
  • Samantha Rossi drove in four runs with two sacrifice flies and a 1-for-2 game at the dish.
  • Theresa Armano improved to 2-1 in the circle with the victory.
  • Madison Erhardt struck out three in two shutout innings.
 

The Bear Facts

  • Kristin Ferrigno and Amber Wainwright extended their hitting streaks to eight games. Csikortos saw her hitting streak halted in game one, finishing 0-for-2 with a walk and two hit by pitches.
  • The Bears snap a four-game skid to Brooklyn College and increase their lead in the all-time series to 19-5-1. It is the first sweep of the Bulldogs since the 2012 season.
  • At 6-2, St. Joseph's is on their second-best start in team history through eight games. (The 2004 squad went 14-0 to open the season.)
