Mount Saint Vincent Overpowers Softball in Skyline Doubleheader

CHESTER, N.Y. — After a split with Purchase yesterday to open conference play, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team took on Mount Saint Vincent in a doubleheader on Sunday. Game one was all Dolphins as they held SJC to just one hit in a double-digit, five-inning victory. The Bears cracked the run column in the second contest but once again faltered in five frames.

How It Happened (Game 1)

• An intentional walk loaded the bases for Katie Moos in the top of the first and she delivered, doubling down the left field line and scoring all runners to put CMSV up 3-0 before the Bears even stepped up to bat.
• The second inning was scoreless but the Dolphins found their stroke again in the third as another intentional walk loaded the bases with no outs. SJC then came up big with a home-to-first double-play, but an error on the next batter scored two extending the lead to 5-0.
• Mount Saint Vincent poured in three more in the fifth and then squashed any doubt of victory in the sixth, plating six runners highlighted by three-straight extra-base hits (double, double, homer) to end the game early in a five-inning mercy rule.

How It Happened (Game 2)

• Three walks in a row to open the first put CMSV in good position to go up early and they did just that, as a Taylor Wittick two-bagger drove in two runners and extended the visitors' lead to 4-0 after a half-inning.
• St. Joseph's responded in their half, however, as Brianna Baglino (Howard Beach, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) singled with a runner on first to get things started. The next batter walked and sophomore Sarah Kampuries (Ozone Park, N.Y./John Adams) then drilled an RBI base-hit up the middle to cut the Bears' deficit to 4-1 after an inning.
• Three-straight hits to open the second kept the Dolphins' momentum going, capped off by a two-run Alanna Alioto-Reyes triple extending the lead to 6-1. A sac fly and RBI double later in the stanza essentially put the game away and CMSV ended the day at 2-0 in Skyline play after another mercy-rule triumph.

For the Bears

• Baglino picked up the Bears' only hit in game one (1-for-2) and followed it up with a solid 2-for-3 line in the second contest.
• Kampuries finished game two at 1-for-3 with an RBI as she drove in Jessica Vento (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (0-for-2, BB, R) for SJC's only run of the day.
• Senior Stephanie Rancel (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) and junior Nicole Quintana (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) each went 1-for-2 in the second outing.
• Junior Victoria Mahoney (Allenwood, N.J./Saint John Vianney) tossed 3.2 innings (4 H, 2 R, 4 K) of relief in game two.
