First-Place Farmingdale Nabs Two Off Softball

JAMAICA, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team suffered 10-0 and 6-3 defeats to Farmingdale State College in Skyline Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Red Storm Field.

The Rams (15-13, 13-1) improved their lead atop the league standings to two games while the Bears (10-17, 5-7) dropped their eighth straight and move into a tie for fifth with Sarah Lawrence.

Game 1: Farmingdale State 10, St. Joseph's 0 (6 inn)

The Rams scored a pair of runs in the second set up by a pair of back-to-back extra-base hits by Julianna Prescia and Sierra Cardenales. The game remained close with both hurlers allowing three combined hits from the third through the fifth and the Rams holding on to a 2-0 lead through five.

But Farmingdale erupted for eight runs in the sixth to break the game open knocking 10 hits in a 15-batter frame. Jessica Lombardo highlighted the inning with a bases-clearing double that put the Rams over the run threshold.

Victoria Mahoney (Allenwood, N.J./Saint John Vianney) knocked a single in the bottom half of the sixth, but the Bears were held to three hits in defeat.

Game 2: Farmingdale State 6, St. Joseph's 3

Farmingdale scored a pair in the first to take an early lead and the Bears responded with their first run of the day in the second as Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) doubled to lead off the inning and scored the next batter on a Brianna Baglino (Howard Beach, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) single that cut the deficit in half to 2-1.

The Rams picked the run back up in the third, on a Julianna Prescia double and posted another solo run in the fourth to extend their lead to 4-1.

A Gabriella Fielding (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) grounder in the fifth cut the slimmed the deficit to 4-2 as the teams posted solo runs in the next four half innings.

Mahoney knocked a one-out double in the sixth and scored on an Alexis Buchanan (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta) single to bring the tying run to the plate with the heart of the lineup up, but SJC couldn't generate any more runs.
