Softball Shuts Out John Jay

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. —  The St. Joseph's University Brooklyn softball team rang out 13 hits and scored an 8-0 non-conference victory over John Jay College on Thursday afternoon, extending their win streak to three games.

How it Happened

The Bears (12-6) scored in each frame of the six-inning affair posting solo runs in every inning except the three-run fourth. 

Alexis Buchanan (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) opened the scoring with a two-out double in the first. A Maeve McKeon (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) sacrifice fly in the third extended the Bears' lead to 3-0.

The navy-and-gray doubled their score in the fourth, by way of Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall), Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills), and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) two-out, RBI singles.

The Bears knocked three doubles in the fifth with a near home run off the top of the wall from Nicole Trani (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) and followed by a Tayler Faraguna (San Diego, Calif./San Pasqual) two-bagger for a 7-0 lead. The Bears loaded the bases in the sixth and Trani brought the Bears to the run rule with a sac fly.

Poppett went the distance in the circle scattering four hits over six innings, striking out three, to improve to 5-2 in the circle with her second shut out of the season.

For the Bears

  • Eight different Bears knocked a hit and five recorded multi-hit games.
  • Faraguna and Heinsch both finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and double. Faraguna scored once and stole two bases. Heinsch scored twice and walked twice.
  • Hartwig and Poppett both went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Hartwig also scored twice.
  • Buchanan went 2-for-2 with a RBI, a run scored, a double, stolen base, and two walks.
