Women’s Swimming Breaks Two More Records in First Triumph Over Brooklyn; Kingman Wins Two Events

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Freshmen Jessica Gnad (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein) and Rebecca Bollmann (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) set two program records in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team defeated borough rival Brooklyn College, 128-76, on Wednesday evening. The women captured 10 events to secure their first victory over the Bulldogs in five meetings and the first meeting since 2013.

On the men's side, senior John Kingman (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) won two individual events to pace the Bears in a 115-57 losing effort.

SJC Highlights

  • The women bookended the victory taking both relay events. In the 400-yard medley relay, Julia Dineen, Rebecca Bollmann, Jessica Gnad and Shannon Doherty teamed up for a nine-second victory (4:53.42). In the closing 400-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of Gnad, Valerie Rodriguez, Brianna Minogue and Eireann Corbett edged out the hosts by one second for the win (4:29.49).
  • Rebecca Bollman lowered her record in the 100-yard breaststroke by a split second to 1:20.44 to win the event. The freshman also swam a personal-best 2:41.27 to win the 200-yard individual medley.
  • In addition to assisting both winning relay squads, freshman Jessica Gnad broke the 100-yard butterfly record held by teammate Shannon Doherty by .14 seconds setting the new SJC standard and winning the event by a half second.
  • Freshman Kathryn Cosenza placed in every individual event she swam collecting a pair of victories in the 100-yard freestyle (1:07.88) and 200-yard freestyle (2:33.45) and later taking third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a personal-best 1:29.58.
  • Freshman Eireann Corbett won both distance events with a personal best in the 1000-yard freestyle (14:30.08) and nearly breaking the seven-minute mark in the 500-yard freestyle (7:01.26) just a split second off her personal best.
  • Senior John Kingman swam his fastest times of the season to win the 1000-yard freestyle (11:21.15) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.16).
  • Senior Julia Dineen swam a personal-best in the 200-yard individual medley (2:53.24) finishing behind Bollmann to take the top two spots in the event.
  • Sophomore Shannon Doherty captured second place in the 50-yard freestyle (27.68) and third place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:13.33).
  • Freshman Valerie Rodriguez captured second-placed points in the 200-yard backstroke (3:06.07) and third-place points in the 50-yard freestyle (29.50).
  • Freshman Juan Sandoval shaved six seconds off his personal best in the 100-yard freestyle to take third in 1:13.53.
  • Senior Matthew Smith lowered his personal best in the 50-yard freestyle (30.84) by nearly two seconds and improved his time in the 100-yard freestyle (1:18.28) to take fourth in both events.
  • Senior Angelo Goutzinopoulos also bettered his times in the 50-yard freestyle (35.33) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:36.53).

Next Up for the Bears

Both squads take a break for nearly a month from competition, returning to the pool in the new year at Kings Point, N.Y. on Tuesday, January 10 for a Skyline Conference meet starting at 6 p.m. The women face hosts United States Merchant Marine Academy and the College of Mount Saint Vincent in a double dual while the men take on the host Mariners.
