Women’s Swimming Notches Second Win in Split With Sarah Lawrence and Old Westbury

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — Powered by three event victories, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team defeated SUNY College at Old Westbury but fell to Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday afternoon. Juan Sandoval notched a victory for the men in a losing effort to the Panthers and Grypons.

SJC Highlights

  • The medley relay squad of Valerie Rodriguez (Woodhaven, N.Y./New Utrecht), Jessica Gnad (Brooklyn, N.Y. /Leon M. Goldstein), Shannon Doherty (Brooklyn, N.Y./Churchill), and Kathryn Cosenza (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) opened the meet with a five-second victory (2:10.89).
  • Sophomore Juan Sandoval (Ridgewood, N.Y./Christ the King) lowered his personal best in the 50-yard freestyle for the third straight meet winning the event in 27.67—his first individual victory.
  • Junior Shannon Doherty edged out Hannah Lawson of Sarah Lawrence by a half second to win the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.30.
  • Sophomore Rebecca Bollmann (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) seized second place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.68).
  • Sophomore Jessica Gnad swam a personal best in the 100-yard butterfly finishing in second in 1:11.43. She also added a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:23.46)
  • Freshman Danny Zhang (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein) earned third-place points in the 100-yard backstroke (1:22.83)

Next Up for the Bears

  • The men and women head to Jamaica, N.Y. on Tuesday (Nov. 21) for a non-conference meet against York College.
