Women’s Swimming Rallies For Tie at Lehman

BRONX, N.Y. — Never leading at any point in the meet and trailing by as many as 14, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team won the final 200-yard freestyle relay by 27 seconds to pull out a 100-100 tie with Lehman College on Monday evening, while the men fell 40-27. On the evening the Bears took six event victories led by Shannon Doherty's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Churchill) two individual wins.

SJC Highlights

  • Junior Shannon Doherty (Brooklyn, N.Y./Churchill) finished first in both her individual events winning the 50-yard freestyle (27.34) by 1.33 and the 100-yard butterfly (1:12.21) by 12 seconds. She contributed 22 of the team's 100 points also helping the 200-yard medley relay squad to a second-place finish.
  • Sophomore Jessica Gnad (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein) notched the first event win for the Bears with a time of 14:03.25 in the 1000-yard freestyle—her first time ever swimming the event—and she posted a personal-best 1:22.00 in the 100-yard breaststroke to contribute second-place points.
  • Sophomore Kathryn Cosenza (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) took a 2-second victory in the 100-yard freestyle swimming a personal best 1:05.48. She also swam a personal-best 2:31.00 in the 200-yard freestyle to take second place.
  • Sophomore Eireann Corbett (Woodhaven, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) won the 500-yard freestyle for the second straight meet in 7:18.92. Along with Grace Penaloza's  (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) third-place finish in the event (7:59.28), the Bears cut the deficit to 2, 82-80, with two events to go.
  • The quartet of Brianna Minogue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney), Penaloza, Kathleen O'Dea (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and Rebecca Bollmann (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) finished the comeback for the draw clocking in a 2:03.21.
  • Rebecca Bollmann added a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:49.19) and a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.50) just behind teammate Gnad.

The Bear Facts

  • The tie is the first in the nine-year history of the women's swimming program. The teams had not met since Nov. 8, 2013.

Next Up for the Bears

  • The Bears will swim their final tune-up before the Skyline Championships tomorrow (January 24) headed to Brooklyn College for a non-conference dual meet starting at 6 p.m.
