WASHINGTON – Three Lady Bears scored in double figures, led by the 10th double-double of the season from Samantha Retas (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team defeated Trinity Washington University, 63-56, on Wednesday night at the Trinity Center.
The Lady Bears (9-8) win their third straight game and move above the .500 mark for the first time this season while the Tigers (3-6) drop their sixth straight contest.
Retas scored a team-high 13 points on 7-of-16 shooting (48 percent) and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to pace the Lady Bears. Junior Kelly McNamee (Glendale, NY/Mary Louis) added 13 points and dished out four assists and swiped a team-high four steals.
Sophomore Taylor Raccuglia (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) dropped in 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Seniors Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) and Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) chipped in eight points, Doran also dishing out a team-high six assists to go along with five rebounds and three steals.
Trinity also finished with three in double figures, led by Thamar Polynice who scored a game-high 15 points with seven steals. Christa Burgess contributed a 13-point, 12-rebound doubledouble and Ellen Betha added 10 points.
In a game that featured 11 ties and six lead changes, the Tigers held a slim 33-32 lead at the intermission.
Trinity expanded their advantage to as many as six midway through the second stanza before the Lady Bears defense – ranked 41st Division III in opponent field-goal percentage – clamped down and limited the Tigers to 23 percent shooting (9-of-39) in the half and held the Tigers without a field goal over the final 2:20 of regulation for the victory.
