Ten Lady Bears Earn HVWAC Winter/Spring All-Academic Honors

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Ten student-athletes from St. Joseph's were honored for their academic achievements during the winter and spring seasons. Haley Betancourt (New York, NY/St. Vincent Ferrer), Erin Collins (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall), Jaclyn Montana (Brooklyn, NY/Bay Ridge Prep) and Laura Sonnylal (Richmond Hill, NY/Archbishop Molloy) from swimming, Kristin D'Chiutiis (Brooklyn, NY/Scholars Academy), Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy), Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's), Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis) and Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) from basketball and Mangan, Marino, Moran and Christina Quintana (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) from softball were recently named to the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Winter/Spring All-Academic Team.

The accolade is the first for Betancourt, Collins, D'Chiutiis, Montana and Moran while Mangan and Quintana have now earned the honor in back-to-back years. Doran and Sonnylal conclude their careers having earned the All-Academic honor for the third consecutive year while Marino is named to the All-Academic Team for the first time since 2011.

Betancourt, a junior swam in four meets setting a career-best time of 7:52.07 in the 500 Yard Freestyle against Sarah Lawrence. Betancourt also had a personal-best time of 48.34 in the 50 yard breaststroke at New Rochelle and Post.

Collins, a sophomore swam in four meets mainly at the 100 Free setting a personal-best time of 1:12.12 against Lehman. Collins also set a career-best time of 41.88 in the 50 yard backstroke in double dual meet against New Rochelle and Post.

Montana, a sophomore appeared in four meets in the 100 yard butterfly setting a career-best time of 1:24.31 against Notre Dame (MD). Montana also set a personal-best time of 36.95 in the 50 yard butterfly at New Rochelle and Post.

Sonnylal, a senior and HVWAC All-Conference selection set a personal-best time of 31.06 in the 50 yard freestyle against Sarah Lawrence. The senior also set a career-best time of 1:10.46 in 100 yard freestyle in double dual meet against New Rochelle and Post.

Doran, a senior concluded her career making 25 starts and averaging 7.3 points per game, fifth-best on the team. The forward was second on the team bringing down 7.5 rebounds and dishing out 2.5 assists. The senior had the most assists by a non-guard in school history with eight against Purchase and Briarcliffe.

Mangan, a senior played in all 27 games for the basketball team and was a HVWAC All-Conference selection after making 26 starts and averaging a career-high 11.1 points in her final season with the Lady Bears. The guard was a deep threat for St. Joseph's making a career-high 51 trifectas while shooting 32 percent from beyond the arc. The senior also contributed for the softball team as she hit .310 on the year with eight RBI and 12 runs scored in 21 games.

Marino, a senior started three games for the basketball team and picked up her first career double-double scoring 12 points while corralling 12 rebounds in St. Joseph's win over Vaughn. The senior also starred on the softball team having been named to the HVWAC All-Conference Team as she finished her career batting .415 with a team-high-tying three home runs to go along with 27 RBI. Marino finished the year with a team-high 13 doubles while placing second on the squad with her 24 runs scored.

Moran, a junior appeared in all 27 games on the hardwood making 13 starts averaging 6.6 points per game while shooting 43% from the field. The forward averaged 5.0 rebounds per game and dished out 1.1 assists per game. Moran was also a member of the softball team and hit .278 on the year with five RBI and 15 runs scored.

D'Chiutiis, a sophomore appeared in 24 games making 13 starts averaging 4.7 points per game, 2.5 rebounds per game and 1.4 assists per game. The guard scored a season-high 18 points at Mount Saint Vincent on November 26th.

Quintana, a junior batted .375 with 12 hits including six doubles with six RBI and six runs scored. The junior was named HVWAC Player of the Week on April 2nd after going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI in Lady Bears doubleheader sweep over York on March 28th.

The All-Academic Team consists of student-athletes who have reached sophomore academic standing and have earned a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or better at the conclusion of the spring semester, and participate in one of the conference's winter and spring sports - basketball, swimming and softball.
