Mayor Bloomberg Honors Lady Bears Alumna Kimberly McCorkell with Big Apple Award

NEW YORK – In a ceremony last month at Gracie Mansion, St. Joseph's College alumna Kimberly McCorkell was honored by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott as one of 11 recipients of the inaugural Big Apple Awards: Recognizing Teacher Excellence in New York City.

McCorkell, a former Lady Bears basketball player who ranks second all-time in rebounding average finishing with 714 career rebounds, was selected among over 2,000 nominations and received a $3,500 classroom grant to deepen her work with students.

After completing a successful career on the basketball court, where she served as team captain for two years and led the Lady Bears to their first-ever appearance at the USCAA Tournament back in 2001, her passion for the Lady Bears led her back to the team as an assistant coach from 2003-2007.

Currently, McCorkell provides academic intervention services to 4th and 5th graders at P.S. 222 The Katherine R. Snyder School in Marine Park, Brooklyn where she has worked since graduating from St. Joseph's with a B.S. in Child Study in 2003.

The Big Apple Awards is the first citywide teacher recognition program open to all full-time teachers in public schools across New York City.
