Women's Basketball Drops Decision to Staten Island, 67-55, at Barclays Center

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) women's basketball team could not take advantage from the foul line as they were defeated by Staten Island, 67-55, at the Barclays Center on Tuesday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lady Bears (4-4) have now dropped three of their last four matchups.

Senior Samantha Retas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) tallied a game-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds. This is the fifth straight game Retas has nabbed team-high in scoring, and the fifth straight contest she has scored in double figures.

Freshman Destiny Marino (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) also notched her second career double-double, scoring 15 points, grabbed 10 boards and dished four assists. Junior Brittany Cervino (College Point, N.Y./St. Agnes) rounded out the three Lady Bears in double figures, netting 10 points.

Meghan Myhre scored a team-high 16 points for the Dolphins (5-5), while Christina Pasaturo recorded a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) in the win. Nikki Fabozzi added seven points to go with seven rebounds.

The game started with both teams going back and forth, with six ties and twelve lead changes throughout the stanza. Staten Island would go into the intermission leading 32-28.

In the second half, the Lady Bears would continue to stay close in the game, and would even regain a small lead in the first five minutes. The Dolphins would pull away after going on a 10-2 run that would put them up double figures. It would be a deficit that St. Joseph's could not recover from.

St. Joseph's, a premiere team on the boards, lost the rebounding advantage for the first time all season. The Dolphins took the edge on the boards, 42-34, including 13 offensive rebounds.

On the offensive end, the Lady Bears shot 40.4% (19 for 47) while holding their opponents to a 36.7% percentage (22 for 60).  However, St. Joseph's could not cash in on their free opportunities throughout the game, shooting just 52% (13 for 25) from the charity stripe. Staten Island got contributions from their second unit, outscoring St. Joseph's 17-3 on bench points.

The Lady Bears will seek to bounce back after the holidays when they go on the road to face CUNYAC foe City College of New York (CCNY) on December 27th. Tip off is at 12:00 p.m. Live stats will be available on SJCBears.com.
