Women's Basketball Faces Off With King's and John Jay This Weekend at the Hill Center

BROOKLYN, N.Y.–The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team will close out a four-game week by extending their best winning streak in four seasons with two games this weekend. The Lady Bears will first have an HVIAC showdown against King's College (N.Y.) on Saturday at 5 p.m. followed by a meeting with John Jay College on Sunday at 3 p.m.

This is the third time the Lady Bears have faced off with King's dating back to 2012, with St. Joseph's winning the last two matchups.

Against John Jay, St. Joseph's leads the all-time series, 3-1, dating back to 1998. The Lady Bears have been victorious in the last three meetings.

Last Meetings

St. Joseph's produced a balanced attack and shot a blistering shooting percentage as they topped King's (N.Y.), 65-33, on December 3rd, 2013 at Brooklyn Technical High School.

Four Lady Bears led the team with eight points apiece. Kristen Candelaria posted career highs in both points (eight) and rebounds (11). Megan Moran tallied eight points and nine boards, while Erica Eddy also chipped in with eight points. Diedre LaVelle tied her career-high with seven rebounds along with eight points.

In their last meeting with John Jay, the Lady Bears won their ninth straight game of the season by topping the Bloodhounds, 69-61 at the Doghouse in Manhattan on February 12, 2012. 

Ashley McQuillan finished with a game-high 23 points, four rebounds, swiped a team-high tying four steals, and dished out three assists. Janine Doran added 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting with four rebounds and Megan Moran chipped in 10 points and five boards to round out the Lady Bears in double figures.

The Lady Bear Facts

Three Lady Bears have paced the balanced attack this season on offense. Samantha Retas, Destiny Marino and Taylor Raccuglia lead the team with 13.0 points per game. Retas is first on the team and ranks second in the HVIAC with 13.0 rebounds per contest.

The forward has notched ten double-doubles this season, which is second most in the HVIAC. She is fifth in the conference in field goal percentage overall (40.4%) and from beyond the arc (30.8%).

Along with 13.0 points per game, Marino is second on the team with 7.5 rebounds per game, and is tied for first place in the conference with 4.4 assists per contest. The freshman has shot efficiently in her first season, ranking second in the HVIAC with 45.4% shooting. She has now scored double figures in 18 straight games.

Raccuglia is third on the team with 7.4 rebounds per contest to go along with the 13.0 points per game. The senior is also second on the team with 3.7 assists per game, putting herself sixth in the HVIAC.

Lady Bears Last Time Out

The Lady Bears led wire-to-wire as they defeated Yeshiva, 59-48, in an HVIAC game Thursday night at the Wellness Center at the College of New Rochelle.

Taylor Raccuglia compiled a game-high 16 points and five rebounds. Destiny Marino was three steals shy of a triple-double, scoring 12 points along with 10 rebounds and a career-high seven steals.

Samantha Simon added 10 points along with three rebounds and two blocks off the bench. Samantha Retas tallied seven points and 11 rebounds, while Erica Eddy finished with seven points and three boards.

A King's Speech

King's is led offensively by the duo of Anna Eaves and Ann Majors throughout the season. Eaves tops the team with a scoring average of 10.6 points while also grabbing 9.7 rebounds per contest. Majors scores 10.5 points per game along with 6.0 boards. Kylie Locklar leads the Lions with 3.0 assists per game to go with 5.7 points.

King's Last Time Out

On Wednesday, the Lions (3-4) fought back in the second half, but the deficit was too much to rally from as they lost to Vaughn, 63-50, on Thursday night at the Elmcor Recreation Center. Ann Majors and Anna Eaves each recorded double-doubles in a losing effort. Majors tallied 13 points to go with 13 rebounds, while Eaves scored 12 and grabbed 12 boards.

In the Dog House

John Jay is led by Brianna Cunningham, who tops the team with both 14.9 points per game (fourth in the CUNYAC) and tied for sixth in the conference with 9.9 rebounds per contest. Josephine Diaz is second on the team with 10.2 points per game and adds 2.3 assists per contest.

Victoria Royal is second on the Bloodhounds and seventh in the CUNYAC with 9.5 rebounds per game to go along with 6.8 points per game. Terri Chu ranks third on the team with 9.3 points and hitting a team-high 42 three pointers.

John Jay Last Time Out

In their last outing, John Jay jumped out of the gate in the first half to soundly defeat Medgar Evers, 65-32, at the Doghouse Friday night.

Josephine Diaz and Brianna Cunningham led four Bloodhounds in double figures with 14 points each. Cunningham also secured 11 rebounds for a double-double. Victoria Royal notched a double-double, scoring 10 points on five-for-five shooting along with 10 boards.
