Three Reach Double Figures But Women's Basketball Drops Opener to CCNY

NEW YORK — Despite three Lady Bears scoring in double figures, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team was handed an 87-69 non-conference road loss by City College of New York powered by a 30-point effort by Tiara Brown.

Turning Point

  • The Beavers held a four-point lead at halftime, but opened the third quarter with 6-0 run to build a 43-33 advantage and the Lady Bears could only pull as close as six for the remainder of the contest.

How it Happened

  • A pair of Samantha Simon free thows and an Erica Eddy trifecta gave the Lady Bears a brief early advantage before Brown powered a 9-3 Beaver spurt that opened a 17-10 lead.
  • St. Joseph's fell behind by as many as nine in the second quarter, but then assembled an 11-2 run capped by a pair of Victoria Porcasi free throws and an Eddy steal and layup that gave the SJC a 33-32 lead, but the Beavers score the final five points of the period and never trailed again.
  • A slow start for the Lady Bears out of the intermission would lead to just 4-for-13 shooting (31 percent) in the period and CCNY raced out to a 61-48 lead after three quarters and maintained a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the game.

For the Lady Bears

  • Destiny Marino scored a team-high 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting and dished out three assists.
  • Erica Eddy tacked on 17 points along with three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Victoria Porcasi contributed 14 points coming off the bench in her collegiate debut, sinking 8-of-10 from the charity stripe and pulling down three rebounds.
  • Kristen Candelaria scored seven points and secured a team-high eight caroms.

For the Beavers

  • Tiara Brown posted game highs of 30 points and 18 rebounds, shooting 14-of-19 (74 percent) from the floor.
  • Erika Richards added 24 points and eight rebounds.
  • The Beavers outshot the Lady Bears 47 percent (35-75) to 39 percent (20-51) and held a 49-36 rebounding edge.
