Marino Nets Career-High 24 Against Division I NJIT

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Sophomore Destiny Marino (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) scored a career- and game-high 24 points against Division I foes NJIT, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team couldn't play David in a 78-41 defeat on Tuesday evening.

Turning Point

  • After the Lady Bears knotted the game at 13-all eight minutes into the contest, a 16-0 Highlander run spanning five minutes across the first and second quarters would put the Lady Bears in a double-digit deficit they couldn't recover from.

For the Lady Bears

  • Marino played all but three minutes and tallied her career best on 7-of-17 shooting and 8-of-9 from the free throw line while also grabbing six boards.
  • Erica Eddy saw her streak of four games in double figures snapped adding six points, two blocks and two steals.
  • Samantha Simon contributed five points and grabbed a career- and team-high eight rebounds, all on the defensive end.  

For the Highlanders

  • Leah Horton tallied 16 points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes of action leading 11 Highlanders to score a field goal.
  • Camerin Spahn had a nead double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
  • Marian came off the bench to score 10 points.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Lady Bears were held to just 26 percent (12-47) shooting by their much larger counterparts with 29 of their attempts coming from behind the three-point line.
  • The Highlanders also held decisive 57-34 rebounding edge and outscored the Lady Bears 50-6 inside the paint.

After five non-conference games to open the season, the Lady Bears will open Skyline Conference play after the Thanksgiving break heading to Riverdale, N.Y. to face the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Monday, November 30 in a doubleheader with the men.
