Women's Basketball Falls to Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline Opener

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Freshly named Skyline Conference Player of the Week Destiny Marino (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) scored a team-high 16 points and Brittany Cervino (College Point, N.Y./St. Agnes) chipped in 12 points, but the College of Mount Saint Vincent ran away with an 89-56 victory over the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team in their Skyline Conference debut on Monday evening.

How it Happened

  • The defending Skyline Conference champions welcomed the league newcomer with a 10-0 spurt to open the game.
  • The Dolphins built as large as a 17-point lead in the 2nd quarter but the Lady Bears remained within reach using a 7-0 run, powered by four straight from Brittany Cervino to cut the deficit to single-digits, ultimately trailing 39-28 at the break.
  • SJC continued to cut into the hosts lead before the hosts broke the game open scoring 14 unanswered and the Dolphins maintained the lead over 20 for the entire 4th quarter.

For the Lady Bears

  • Destiny Marino led the team in scoring for the fourth time this season with 16 points also grabbing five rebounds with two steals, two assists and a block.
  • Senior Brittany Cervino shot 4-of-8 and 3-of-3 from behind the arc for a season-high 12 points in only 17 minutes in a reserve role.
  • Senior Erica Eddy netted eight points to go along with three rebounds.
  • Kristin Ferrigno and Victoria Porcasi shared team-high honors with Marino with five rebounds.

  • Kristen Merrell shot 5-of-10 from the field and netted a game-high 18 points finishing one rebound shy of a double-double leading four in double figures
  • Theresa Carrey scored 11 points and directed the offense with five assists.
  • Alexandra Gunderma tallied 11 points in just eight minutes of action off the bench.
