Marino's Double-Double Not Enough as Women's Basketball Hosted Old Westbury in Hill Center Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Reigning Skyline Conference Player of the Week Destiny Marino (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) recorded her first double-double of the season with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team suffered an 86-68 league setback to SUNY College at Old Westbury on Wednesday evening in their home opener.

Turning Point

  • Old Westbury closed the first quarter on an 11-0 run to lead 23-9 and the Lady Bears couldn't close the gap.

How it Happened

  • After the Panthers built a 16-point lead to open the second stanza, the Lady Bears scored 11 straight capped by triples from Brittany Cervino, Erica Eddy and Kellie O'Neill.
  • Another trifecta later in the period by Victoria Porcasi would trim the deficit to four, 28-24, at the 5:57 mark.
  • But the Panthers would push the lead back to double digits taking a 45-32 lead at the intermission and extended their advantage throughout the final two fames.

For the Lady Bears

  • Sophomore Destiny Marino posted team highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds recording her fifth career double-double and added a trio of steals and assists. She found her way to the line with regularity finishing 10-of-14 from the stripe.
  • Freshman Victoria Porcasi made her third straight start and netted 12 points along with three boards.
  • Senior Erica Eddy scored in double figures for the fifth time this season tallying 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, also grabbing six rebounds.
  • Junior Samantha Simon added six points.

For the Panthers

  • Jasmine Robinson led three in double figures with 18 points and four assists.
  • Crystal Barnes had a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double with two blocks
  • Nikki Alexander also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in just 12 minutes of action off the bench.
  • Raven Pentz dished out a game-high eight assists can contributed seven points.

Inside the Box Score

  • Old Westbury maintained a 73-41 rebounding advantage and outscored SJC 54-16 in the paint.
