Women's Basketball Cruises to Season Sweep of SJC Long Island

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — After scoring a career-high in their first meeting of the season, senior Caitlyn Staab (Lynbrook, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) logged her second-highest total of the season with a game-high 22 as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) nabbed a wire-to-wire victory over St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on Tuesday evening at The Hill Center.

For the Bears (9-5, 6-2), it was their 10th straight victory in the sibling rivalry with the Golden Eagles (2-11, 1-6).

How It Happened

A pair of Lauren Quesada (Westbury, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) baskets to open the scoring powered a 5-0 Bears run and Brooklyn stretched their lead to 17-8 at the end of the first with all five starters recording a field goal and the visitors managing just a 15 percent connect rate (3-20) in the period.

Staab led all scorers with 11 points at the intermission as the Golden Eagles could do little to match the Bears presence down low, maintaining a 24-8 edge in paint scoring that led to a 30-18 halftime lead.

Long Island found the stroke coming out of the lockers improving to a 40 percent connect rate (6-15), but Brooklyn also saw an improved efficiency (9-22) in a 22-14 Bears third quarter and they continued to pull away, building as large as a 26-point lead in the fourth.

For the Bears

  • Caitlyn Staab shot 9-of-18 from the floor for her game-high 22, also pulling down eight boards. In the December road meeting against the Golden Eagles, she scored a career-high 30 with nine rebounds.
  • Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) compiled her seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and 19 caroms, also pulling down three assists.
  • Victoria Porcasi (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) narrowly extended her streak scoring in double-figures to 25 games with a 10-point, seven-rebound, six-assist effort.
  • Samantha Wilber (Island Heights, N.J./Central Regional) chipped in seven points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 22 minutes off the bench.
