Women’s Basketball’s Five-Game Win Streak Snapped at Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team dropped their first Skyline Conference contest of the season, falling to the College of Old Westbury, 73-61, on Saturday afternoon. The loss also ends the Bears' five-game win streak.

How it Happened

The Panthers (4-4, 4-1 Skyline) took advantage of early turnovers and missed baskets by the Bears (5-4, 4-1 Skyline), starting the game with a 10-0 lead. The Bears cut their deficit in half on scores by Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy). Senior Lauren Quesada (Westbury, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) hit both of her free throws to put the Bears within two points, down 13-11 before Old Westbury closed out the quarter with the 15-11 lead.

Old Westbury saw their lead grow back to ten in the second quarter. However, a combined nine points by Samantha Wilber (Island Heights, N.J./Central Regional) and Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) would see the Bears only trail by four, 29-25, entering the intermission.

O'Donnell and Quesada provided the scoring for the Bears in the third frame, totaling eight points amongst each other. With 2:09 remaining in the period, the Panthers took their largest lead of the game, 48-33. The score stood that way as the game headed into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter started with three-pointers from Jamie Provino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) and O'Donnell. Buckets from Breen and Quesada allowed the Bears to pull within two possessions, trailing 58-54. Despite Provino going for nine points and Breen and Quesada scoring six each in the period, Old Westbury closed out the game by scoring 15 of the final 24 points en route to the 73-61 win.

For the Bears

  • O'Donnell played all 40 minutes, scoring a team-high 19 points. She dished out five assists, registered seven rebounds and three steals.
  • Quesada pulled down 13 boards to lead all players while scoring 10 points. She also recorded four steals.
  • Breen scored 10 points of her own.
  • Provino netted her nine points in the fourth quarter.
