Women's Basketball Narrows Deficit, Falls to St. Joseph's Long Island

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) led the way for the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team with 19 points with Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) not far behind with 11 of her own. However, their efforts weren't enough as sister school St. Joseph's University, NY (Long Island) claimed a 76-52 win on Thursday night at The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The Golden Eagles opened the game with a 9-4 advantage, which grew to 24-9 to end the first quarter.

The two sides tied the second quarter, 22 apiece, with Hurt spearheading the Bears' offense. However, the visitors went into the break with a 15-point advantage, 46-31.

SJBK came alive in the third. The gap narrowed to 55-52 thanks to Hurt, Kennedy, and Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) combining for 20 points in the period. SJLI held onto a slim 57-52 margin going into the fourth.

The Golden Eagles kept the Bears off the board in the closing stanza, resulting in a 76-52 scoreline.

For the Bears

  • Hurt added seven rebounds, a pair of assists, and as many steals to go with her 19 points.

  • Kennedy's 11 matches her season high. She also had a pair of assists.

  • Adeoye and Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) each had near-double-doubles of eight points and nine boards.

  • Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) collected seven caroms.
