Eight Lady Bears Earn HVWAC Fall All-Academic Honors
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Eight student-athletes from St. Joseph's were honored for their academic achievements during the fall season. Lauren Conter (Glendale, NY/Archbishop Molloy), Hannah Darnell (Nashville, TN/Siegel) and Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) from cross country, Jessica Gargano (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney), Melissa Maloy (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) and Krysta Verdone (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) from soccer, Victoria LoBosco (Glendale, NY/Archbishop Molloy), Mangan, and Verdone from tennis and Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, NY/Archbishop Molloy) from volleyball were recently named to the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) All-Academic Team.
The accolade is the first for each Lady Bear besides Darnell who has been on the All-Academic Team the last two years and Gargano who was on the team last season.
Conter, a sophomore ran in all five races with a season best 28:54 in the 5K at the Staten Island Invite finishing 79th. Darnell, a senior ran in two races for the Lady Bears and finished 41st at the HVAC Championships with a time of 30:00. Mangan, a senior ran in all five races and won the York College Invite and the Medgar Evers Invite. Mangan was named to the HVWAC All-Conference Team after finishing in the top 5 in four out of her five races this season.
Gargano, a senior midfielder made 12 starts and recorded one shot on goal during the season. Maloy, a sophomore midfielder appeared in and started all 13 games and scored her first career goal against Medgar Evers on September 27th. Maloy was also named to the USCAA National All-Academic Team. Verdone, a junior midfielder appeared in five games for the Lady Bears.
LoBosco, a sophomore won three singles matches on the year including one at the HVWAC Championships playing primarily at the No.1 spot and was named to the HVWAC All-Conference Team. Mangan won one singles match and took home three doubles wins on the season including one against conference rival New Rochelle. Verdone took home three singles wins with one coming in the semifinals of the HVWAC Championships and two doubles victories on the season.
Moncino, a sophomore outside hitter appeared in all 21 matches finishing second on the team with 38 service aces. Moncino had a career-high 28 digs against the Culinary.
The All-Academic Team consists of student-athletes who have reached sophomore academic standing and have earned a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or better at the conclusion of the fall semester, and participate in one of the conference's four fall sports, cross country, soccer, tennis and volleyball.
