Women's Soccer Falls to CCNY in Home Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Despite a goal from sophomore Glenda Ascencio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn International), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team fell, 6-1, to CCNY on Sunday afternoon at Brooklyn Technical High School Field.

The Lady Bears (0-4) remain winless on the young season while the Beavers (5-2) have now won four games in a row.

St. Joseph's opened the match with the first shot on goal coming off the foot of senior Cynthia Gambino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) but CCNY would dominate the first half possessing the ball in the Lady Bears end.

The Beavers would strike first at the eight minute mark of the first half as a breakaway goal up the left side from Yanique Newman founds it way past St. Joseph's senior goalkeeper Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport HS) inside the near post to put CCNY up 1-0.

Less than a minute later the Beavers would tack on another goal this time coming off a defensive turnover that was put away by Jasmine Campbell and assisted by Newman.

CCNY would add two more goals in the 16th and 29th minute both by Newman who finished the day with four goals and two assists. The Lady Bears held the Beavers scoreless for the remainder of the half and headed into the intermission down 4-0.

The second stanza started as the first one ended with CCNY overwhelming St. Joseph's and they would break through with a second goal by Campbell coming off a cross from the right side by Newman.

The Lady Bears fought back picking up their intensity with the payoff coming in the 59th minute when sophomore Shannon Fahy (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) took a corner and in the ensuing scramble for the ball Ascencio took the loose ball and fired it towards the net with it missing all the players in front of the goal and finding its way past Beavers goalkeeper Nicole Carroll for St. Joseph's first goal of the season.

CCNY concluded their scoring with the fourth goal of the day by Newman in the 86th minute.

The Beavers finished the game with a 12-2 shots on goal advantage.

Farinella made six saves on the day and absorbed the loss.

The Lady Bears return to action as they host Medgar Evers on Thursday, September 26th at 4 p.m.
