Women's Soccer Spoil Brooklyn College Shutout Streak in Defeat

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team failed to avenge a loss earlier in the season to borough rivals Brooklyn College, falling 6-1 on Wednesday evening at BC Field.

Despite allowing a quick goal in the second minute, the Lady Bears (2-9) settled and hung tough with the one-loss Bulldog (10-1) squad. Brooklyn held a 17-1 shot advantage in the opening stanza, but the defense anchored by senior Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport H.S.), who made nine saves in the opening 45 minutes, helped St. Joseph's remain within reach and down only 2-0 at the break.

But the Bulldogs opened up the game in the second half with swift passing in the midfield setting up several scoring opportunities and all six of the Brooklyn goals came assisted. Sayla Flores directed the action notching three assists on three goals in a span of less than eight minutes that sent the Lady Bears down 6-0 with just under 15 minutes to play.

Sophomore Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein) spoiled the shutout bid in the 79th minute – Brooklyn shutting out the opposition in all previous nine wins this season – firing a direct kick from 20 yards out just past the goalkeeper inside the left post for her second goal of the season. The strike was the lone shot on goal for the Lady Bears, who suffered a 38-3 shot disadvantage in the contest.

For Brooklyn, Shani Abrahams and Jordan Kerwin tallied two goals each. Farinella finished with 17 saves in defeat.

St. Joseph's returns to the pitch this Saturday, October 19th facing sister campus St. Joseph's-Long Island in a non-conference tilt at the SJC Outdoor Complex starting at 2 p.m.
